If I could only have one skincare item, I’d choose a serum….and sunscreen. Ok..ok ..did I say just one? Sigh…Ok, serum would be my choice .

What is a serum? Do you need it? Does it really work? Or is it just another marketing strategy by skincare companies to ploy you into thinking you need more than you actually do?

Serum is a specialised treatment that is used on cleansed face or after toner, before moisturiser. It contains highly concentrated nutrients and antioxidants in their active form. Due to smaller size molecules, serums are able to penetrate deep into the skin unlike moisturisers. That’s why serum comes with a heftier price-tag! Most serums are designed for all skin types, though some formulation are best to address specific concerns like wrinkles, pigmentation, dullness and sagging skin.

If you’re young and do not have much skin issues, sticking to the 3 step regime (cleanse, tone, moisturise) and skipping serum would be fine. If you’re in your 30s (and that’s still young too, by the way :P), I believe you are missing out if you skipped serum, seriously ladies! Serum keeps the skin nourished and protects it from free radicals and environmental damage. It also has brightening and anti-ageing benefits, y’all!!

My personal favourite is the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair. Yes, it’s pricey but I only have one face and this face has gone through a lot!! So, it deserve some TLC. Hehe..The reason I chose this one is because it is an award-winning product and has stood the test of time. It was first launched 30 years ago and is still the star product of Estee Lauder. In fact, it is the second best-selling item (competing with the rest of skincare and makeup)  in Sephora, KLCC.I bought it after studying the reviews on Makeup Alley (my fav reference site), 400 plus review which were mostly positive and it scored 4.1/5.

After cleansing my face, I pat dry slightly and while the skin is still damp, I slather a dime size of serum all over. Let it sink into the skin for a few minutes, then apply moisturiser to seal all the goodness .

I started using it 3 months ago and still have much left. My verdict: will definitely repurchase. I find that I have brighter and well hydrated skin. My pores are significantly smaller and the discoloration from pigmentations and pimples are  less. I look younger too  😛 …err…or is it just my imagination. Haha. Anyway, I love this stuff!
